June Review

So we're now past half way for the year, time to start checking out those yearly goals. June was about normal until everything seemed to go wrong at the end.

My running started bad with my glute pain continuing to get worse, then I'm not sure what I did differently but it started to settle down, perhaps a little bit more stretching. This led to my best training time around Princes Park, a pretty good time at my first park run event at Westerfolds Park (18:41 for 5 kilometres) and another near PB for a 10 kilometre training run along the Eastlink trail (even while battling a cold). So that was all too much good news, and in the final week I did some serious damage to my foot (probably plantar fasciitis coming back yet again) and have barely been able to walk for three days and counting. The timing is made worse with the Gold Coast half marathon less than a week away, and it will also be hard to maintain my weight without being able to exercise too, since I barely manage to stay at my current level with six days of running each week.

My shares had two bad weeks in the same month, each one was described as "the worst in three years", so now I'm actually losing money - hopefully I get some dividends soon... To make matters worse I had some money invested in another one of those great companies that tried to cheat on their accounting, so those stocks plummeted even more (much more) than the rest. I don't really mind any short term losses though, as I probably expect to keep these investments for a year at least - or until housing becomes affordable again...

The NBA finals are over now, the first two games were good with overtime but then Golden State figured out a better strategy and it became a bit inevitable. LeBron James not winning the finals MVP was a stupid outcome. Just like the XBox Gold service it was all too easy to sign up for a paid account with NBA League Pass, but when you want to cancel the subscription it's almost impossible to do it. Worse still, there's a whole separate process for international customers which ends up amounting to sending a manual email to some outsourced company. The NBA draft was on a week later too, I was working from home that day but when I turned it on at 10am like advertised I'd already missed the first four picks!

At work I'm still just as busy as usual, since I now also have to spend time reviewing other developer's work, as well as trying to be involved in all of the ongoing projects. I was legitimately sick for two days so I got to have an unexpected four day weekend, but it still seemed to go too quickly.

I only got two recipes baked for the month, not bad but could have been better.

I made a bit of progress on the to do list again.

  • Europe holiday
    • The Premier League fixtures were released at last
    • The first week has no good games, the next three are a little better
    • Spending more time searching for flights and hotels now I have the exact dates
      • Edinburgh is really expensive and has almost no modern hotels
      • Other cities have better options
  • Gold Coast holiday
    • Finished the planning, only a short three day trip
  • Investment property
    • I just researched some of the costs involved, seemed like a good first step
      • CGT and negative gearing etc.
    • No plans to buy property right now, but useful information to know
  • Phone upgrade
    • The Samsung Galaxy S4 was the best of the available options
  • Researched investment property costs
  • Resume
    • Hard to be motivated and make it a priority, but I'm almost done!
  • Super contribution
    • Finished research and made a decision
    • Just waiting for the new financial year (and sharemarket stability) to begin

And that was all for June.

  • Books
    • Dexter Is Delicious
      • Dexter isn't even killing anymore
      • Weird main story with cannibals, ridiculous ending again
      • 5 out of 10
  • Movies
    • Mad Max Fury Road
      • No point to the movie, just one long driving scene
      • Then they go back the other way...
      • 4 out of 10
    • The 84 Draft
      • Pretty boring, mostly recycled footage I'd seen many times before
      • 4 out of 10
  • Movies (documentaries)
    • Gone In Georgia
      • 6 out of 10
    • Hot Girls Wanted
      • 7 out of 10
    • Thought Crimes - The Case Of The Cannibal Cop
      • 4 out of 10
  • Music
    • Jebediah at Corner Hotel
      • First hour was just average, only a few good songs
      • Second hour was the full Slightly Odway album, much better
      • 7 out of 10
  • TV
    • Better Call Saul
      • A few slow episodes mid-season
      • Got better towards to end
      • 8 out of 10
    • How To Get Away With Murder
      • Fairly entertaining, although a few too many flashbacks
      • The student characters were very unrealistic
      • The ending and the drawn out double episode finale was very disappointing
      • 6 out of 10
    • Struggle Street
      • Pretty fascinating short series about a poor community in Western Sydney
      • 8 out of 10
    • Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
      • Alright, but feels too much like an alternative version of 30 Rock
      • Most of the characters aren't great
      • Still enjoyable and only a half hour show so it doesn't drag on
      • 7 out of 10
  • Video Games
    • None again!
