2019 Running Review

A reasonable year in running, no major injuries but a lot of annoying smaller ones.

The totals were almost the same as the previous year:

  • 3031.52 kilometres
    • 3065.56 kilometres in 2018
    • 3120.94 kilometres in 2015
  • 231 hours
    • 232 hours in 2018
    • 235 hours in 2015

The major events for the years were:

  • January
    • Rosebud Australia Day Run - 10 km - 38:55 @ 3:55/km
  • February
    • Warburton - 10km - 38:06 @ 3:54/km

    • Run The Rock - 13.5km - 54:57 @ 4:03/km

    • Sri Chinmoy Albert Park - 10km - 37:41 - 3:48/km
  • July
    • Run Melbourne - 10 km - 38:49 @ 3:53/km

  • November
    • Ballarat Run For A Cause - 10km - 36:57 @ 3:45/km (short)

It was slow progress, but towards the middle and end of the year I made some minor improvements to record new best times for 5 kilometre parkrun, 10 kilometre and half marathon. Having an ongoing hamstring injury and dealing with the summer heat, I have to try and not lose all the fitness going into the new year like often happens.

The parkrun summary:

  • 52 events
    • 47 in 2018
    • 48 in 2017
  • 13 new events
    • 10 in 2018
    • 18 in 2017
  • 18:03 - Lilydale Lake and 18:04 - Frog Hollow
    • 18:16 - Lilydale Lake in 2018

The new parkrun events were:

  • January
    • Mernda
  • February
    • KM Reedy Reserve
  • April
    • Pakenham
    • Euroa
    • Mansfield Botanic
  • July
    • Surfers Paradise
  • August
    • Brimbank
    • Birdsland Reserve
  • September
    • Lancefield
  • October
    • Wyndham Vale
  • November
    • Zillmere
    • Rosebud

November Review

This is the November review.

A bad month of running overall.

Had a different type of back and leg pain after the Brisbane trip, the symptoms seemed like sciatica. If I tried to bend over at all I'd get a really sharp pain through both legs. The only positive was that running didn't trigger it due to being upright.

I was feeling a bit of training soreness in my right leg leading up to the Ballarat 10km race, but was alright on the day and managed a good race and probably a new best time. The course distance only came in at about 9.85 kilometres which was a shame, but was on track to beat my previous time. On the drive home my leg continued to become more uncomfortable, and I've been waiting two weeks since and it still hasn't recovered much. I've missed most of my weekly running but just been good enough for parkruns on the weekend, and even managed an 18:20 at Rosebud somehow.

The goal now is to keep my one race per month streak going, and to be ready for parkruns over the Christmas and New Year period - somehow I seem to be injured every December.

Birdsland Reserve parkrun

No biking.

Had a pretty good month in shares, might be able to look at investing some money again now, but for the moment I just added a bit more into my investment loan - which I might look to start paying down soon.

Have the NBA, NFL and premier league all going currently. I haven't watched any NBA games despite the many team changes this year, not really impressed which the significant increase in scoring and three point shooting so far. I went to a couple of the local Victoria gridiron matches - the last round of the season and the second week of finals. The 'Vic Bowl' is in early December but might not be competitive as one team is undefeated and usually win easily.

Croydon gridiron

Have a few things on the to do list this month.

  • Brisbane holiday report
  • Canon printer + scanner
    • Just decided to buy one - very cheap and the scanner function is a bonus
    • Haven't owned a printer for years, inconvenient having to print at work
  • Car
    • Finally decided on the Lancer Black Edition before they all sold out
    • Haven't driven it much yet, slightly more power than the old Lancer I suppose
    • Bigger car size will take a bit to get used to
    • Daytime running lights are a bit strange
    • The previous Lancer lasted about 15 years for $15,000
    • Temporarily paying for two car registrations and insurance
  • December holidays
    • Not sure if I will have two weeks mandatory annual leave yet
    • Just planning some parkrun locations so far as the announcements come in
  • Running
    • Have not planned much for 2020 yet
    • Possibly one Canberra and Hobart early in the year, and NZ a bit later
  • Windows 10 upgrade
    • Going to wait until December holidays
    • Created all the Windows 7 backup and recovery plan

Lancer Black, which is mostly white

Just moving along at work, hasn't been much fun sitting all day which a leg injury, it feels like I am more sore at the end of the day than when I started. Hopefully finally done with all of the forms for getting a security clearance, that wasn't fun.

That's it for this month.
