March Review

This is the March review. Nearing the end of warm days and sunlight outside of work hours.

Finally seeing some small improvements in my running results.

  • I've stopped using my knee support and instead just put some tape below the knee
    • So far it's gone better than expected, but dealing with unrelated (maybe) calf soreness
    • Even reached 20km on weekend runs
  • Still have not run any races since Australia Day
    • Got a 10km on April 2 at last
    • Most of my training has been limited to 5 kilometres fast running, so not very confident
  • Good parkrun time under 19:00 after going back to the Lilydale track
  • Two new personal bests at The Tan, my real best is probably a modified race during Sunset Series though

Went for one bike ride but it didn't go great. Really sore hamstrings afterwards, also don't have much confidence with bike balance, high speed or turning yet.

Took a short trip to Ballarat over Easter, one day doesn't really count as a holiday.

  • Friday
    • 2 hour drive to Ballarat
    • Stopped at Lake Wendouree, the 1956 Olympic memorial and botanical gardens
    • Hotel check-in, only one bed
    • Got burger for dinner, not much open on Good Friday, massive box of chips
    • Tried to sleep on the couch, but too uncomfortable so put blankets on the floor
  • Saturday
    • Freezing cold overnight
    • Short run to Ballarat parkrun
    • Only wanted a top 10 but had to work hard for it, around 20 minutes
    • Hotel check-out
    • Tour around the city centre, very quiet
    • Saw some landmarks, but found no magnets for sale
    • Stopped at Eureka Stockade gardens, the museum was closed
    • Had lunch at the lake before leaving
    • Stopped at a vintage market warehouse on the way back
    • Short detour to the outlets in Bundoora

Lake Wendouree

Ballarat parkrun at Victoria Park.

Just one more terrible month for shares, the market overall is  back to where it was several years ago, and I lost like 20k in two consecutive days. I wrote a script to calculate how much profit I'd made overall at three month intervals, ended up being more effort than I hoped since the data is not perfect and not easily available.

Almost too many sports for the month with the NCAA march madness tournament in particular. Having Foxtel was good to be able to record all the games, but the fast forward is just so slow, and there's so many ads. Kansas did well but lost by a lot in the semi-finals.

I went back to the NBL for game one and three of the NBL finals after going to the first game of the semi-finals. Game one was a good win, game three almost ended up in overtime after Melbourne gave away a good lead in the last quarter. I think the NBL arena is too loud if my ears are ringing when I get home.

The to do list has too many annoying small things, but gradually getting smaller:

  • May holiday
    • Still difficult timing due to end of a project
    • Haven't got confirmation yet, quite frustrating
  • Foxtel
    • Got the crappy NBN splitter option, which only comes with the old IQ2 box
    • Had to complain about getting billed incorrectly for IQ2
    • Got satellite arranged now and some billing discounts
  • Resume
    • Never have motivation to update it, but added my latest project
    • Need to do Linked In finally as well, maybe once next project starts
  • Running Routes
    • Started putting together a big list
    • Identified more potential places, but starting to get further away
  • Yearly

Similar to the end of the previous project, sometimes I have almost nothing to do at work but usually something pops up. Should be finished with this project in April or early May, no idea what will be next again. It would be good to have some spare time to study for some exams actually.

That's it for this month.

  • Books
    • None
  • Movies
    • None
  • Music
    • BRMC
      • Good except a few songs before the encore were a bit flat
      • 8 out of 10
    • Grizzly Bear
      • The zoo venue was ok, but all the good spots were taken by the time I arrived
      • Some of the songs are a bit hard to like, takes a lot of listens
      • 7 out of 10
  • TV
    • How To Get Away With Murder
      • Another unbelievable plot but entertaining otherwise
      • 5 out of 10
  • Video Games
    • Xbox 360
      • Final Fantasy XIII-2
        • Finished the main story!
        • 60 hours played, but it keeps counting in menus so probably lower
        • Just trying to finish a few more achievements, but the last few might take a while
    • Next is either *another* Final Fantasy XIII expansion or install the Xbox One, hopefully it works with HDMI splitter
