January Review

This is the January review. Still need to do the 2017 and 2018 stuff too.

Busy month for running, starting on day one with the parkrun double in Canberra - see NSW and Canberra 2017-18. I came up with a new running route from Ringwood to Croydon Hills during my time off - I need to make a catalog of all the routes, can never have enough variety.

No new parkrun adventures otherwise, just some slower local parkruns in between training for the Rosebud Australia Day 10km fun run. Some 40 degree days made training a bit difficult, but I managed a few track sessions - either 8 x 600 metres with 200 metres walk in between or a 5 kilometre session which went terrible. Not surprisingly the 10km race was slow too, just made 4:00/km again so have made no improvement in a year. I've got some new right knee soreness since the race to deal with too.

Lilydale Lake parkrun.

Nothing new to report for biking yet, I need to get out riding soon, but I'm not sure what this new knee problem means for that.

I got most of my money returned from the shares I missed out on in capital raising which was annoying, I wouldn't have sold my existing shares had I known I'd only get 10% of what I had applied for. I think I made some good alternative investments with the refund though. Otherwise not much to say except all of my mining resources are going terrible - bought too many and only one or two are any good. That's a lesson for next time. I have my margin loan going now, I've been taking some notes so will do a full report of getting it started a bit later.

I had another attempt at making some money betting on the Australian Open tennis, but a lot of upsets in the early rounds set me back a lot. I think I roughly lost $100 on the bets and made $150 from the bonus bets, despite a lot of really bad luck on some of those bonus bets too. Perhaps will make another $25 to finish off, but I don't know if it was worth the time. The Big Bash and NFL are just about finished too, which means it will just be the NBA and Premier League for a while.

A worse effort than usual on the to do list:
  • Easter holiday
    • Ruled out Hawaii due to price and the run event was only 21km
    • Not sure if there is another good option or just wait until winter
  • NSW report
    • Finished, see link above
  • Running review

Have settled in at work now, everything is alright except the office space is terrible. The worst resourced office I've ever worked at, hopefully they fix up the seating allocations soon at a minimum.

That's it for this month:
  • Books
    • None
  • Movies
    • The Commuter
      • The story made no sense at all, particularly the ending
      • 4 out of 10
  • Music
    • Foo Fighters and Weezer
      • Big stadium show
      • Weezer were a great support band
      • Foo Fighters were good too except when a few songs dragged on too much
      • Played for nearly 2.5 hours
      • 9 out of 10
  • TV
    • Black Mirror
      • Arkangel
        • About a device to monitor and impact what a person (child) sees and experiences
        • Interesting story and good pace
        • 7 out of 10
      • Crocodile
        • A bit far fetched, replaying and recreating events from peoples memories
        • 6 out of 10
      • Hang The DJ
        • Double layered relationship match-making I suppose would describe it
        • A bit slow, poor ending
        • 5 out of 10
      • Metalhead
        • Quite different to most other episodes, black and white and not much dialog
        • 6 out of 10
  • Video Games
    • Xbox 360
      • Final Fantasy XIII-2
        • Still trying to grind through to the finish
        • Not much fun, the non-stop battles required no skill or thought

2017 Running Review

This year was mixed again - started well, then out of action with a bad ankle injury that ran through most of April to July and was a big setback for fitness. See 2015 and 2016 for previous years with the same format.

The totals:
  • 2192.18 kilometres - 929.92 for the previous year and 3132.14 for the best year
  • 168 hours - 72 for the previous year and 236 for the best year

The major events for the year were:
  • January
    • Rosebud Australia Day - 10km - 38:59 @ 3:56/km
  • Feburary
    • Warburton - 21km - 1:31:06 @ 4:20/km (not competitive)
  • March
    • Sri Chinmoy Canberra - 10km - 39:55 @ 4:01/km
  • April
    • Injured
  • May
    • Red Bull Wings For Life - 15km - 1:30:54 @ 6:05/km (injured)
  • June
    • Traralgon - 10km - 39:22 @ 4:00/km
    • Sri Chinmoy Albert Park - 10km - 39:13 @ 3:58/km
  • July
    • Sri Chinmoy Princes Park - 10km - 40:14 @ 4:04/km
  • August
    • Shepparton - 10km - 39:27 @ 3:59/km
  • September
    • Harvest Run - 13km - 56:30 @ 4:19/km
  • October
    • Melbourne Marathon - 21km - 1:27:09 @ 4:06/km
  • November
    • Bendigo Bank - 10km - 40:08 @ 4:02/km
    • City2Sea - 15km - 59:58 @ 4:01/km
    • Rotorua - 21km - 1:33:03 @ 4:29/km

There's some interesting patterns from the list. There's one race a month usually, and I've been frustratingly stuck at 4:00/km all year, although the City2Sea result is probably the best since it was over 15 kilometres, and the speed at the Melbourne Marathon wasn't too bad either.

Added 18 new parkrun locations to the list, passed 50 and getting close to 100.
  • Albert Park
  • Berwick Springs
  • Chelsea Bicentennial
  • Coburg
  • Darebin
  • Diamond Creek
  • Hagley (New Zealand)
  • Hastings Foreshore
  • Highlands
  • Karkarook
  • Maribyrnong
  • Marriott Waters
  • Merimbula
  • Parkville
  • Puarenga (New Zealand)
  • Sale
  • Studley
  • Wilson Botanic

Here's a summary of parkruns by year:
  • 2015 - 13 starting from June 13 at Westerfolds Park
  • 2016 - 29
  • 2017 - 48

This is how my 2017 bests compare with all time bests:
  • 2017
    • 5.00km Karkarook parkrun 18:29 3:42/km
    • 9.89km Rosebud Australia Day 38:59 3:56/km
    • 14.90km City 2 Sea 59:58 4:01/km
    • 21.28km Melbourne Marathon 1:27:09 4:06/km
  • All Time
    • 4.92km Jells parkrun 18:14 3:42/km (November 28 2015)
    • ~10.00km Albert Park VRR 38:30 3:51/km (May 25 2014)
    • 14.73 City 2 Sea 56:55 3:52/km (November 15 2015)
    • 21.16km Melbourne Marathon 1:23:23 3:56/km (October 18 2015)

For 2018 my only goals are to try and avoid a long term injury and get a best time for 5 and 10 kilometres.
