June Review
So we're now past half way for the year, time to start checking out those yearly goals. June was about normal until everything seemed to go wrong at the end.
My running started bad with my glute pain continuing to get worse, then I'm not sure what I did differently but it started to settle down, perhaps a little bit more stretching. This led to my best training time around Princes Park, a pretty good time at my first park run event at Westerfolds Park (18:41 for 5 kilometres) and another near PB for a 10 kilometre training run along the Eastlink trail (even while battling a cold). So that was all too much good news, and in the final week I did some serious damage to my foot (probably plantar fasciitis coming back yet again) and have barely been able to walk for three days and counting. The timing is made worse with the Gold Coast half marathon less than a week away, and it will also be hard to maintain my weight without being able to exercise too, since I barely manage to stay at my current level with six days of running each week.
My shares had two bad weeks in the same month, each one was described as "the worst in three years", so now I'm actually losing money - hopefully I get some dividends soon... To make matters worse I had some money invested in another one of those great companies that tried to cheat on their accounting, so those stocks plummeted even more (much more) than the rest. I don't really mind any short term losses though, as I probably expect to keep these investments for a year at least - or until housing becomes affordable again...
The NBA finals are over now, the first two games were good with overtime but then Golden State figured out a better strategy and it became a bit inevitable. LeBron James not winning the finals MVP was a stupid outcome. Just like the XBox Gold service it was all too easy to sign up for a paid account with NBA League Pass, but when you want to cancel the subscription it's almost impossible to do it. Worse still, there's a whole separate process for international customers which ends up amounting to sending a manual email to some outsourced company. The NBA draft was on a week later too, I was working from home that day but when I turned it on at 10am like advertised I'd already missed the first four picks!
At work I'm still just as busy as usual, since I now also have to spend time reviewing other developer's work, as well as trying to be involved in all of the ongoing projects. I was legitimately sick for two days so I got to have an unexpected four day weekend, but it still seemed to go too quickly.
I only got two recipes baked for the month, not bad but could have been better.
I made a bit of progress on the to do list again.
And that was all for June.

And that was all for June.

- Got better towards to end
- 8 out of 10

- 6 out of 10
- Struggle Street
- Pretty fascinating short series about a poor community in Western Sydney
- 8 out of 10
- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
- Alright, but feels too much like an alternative version of 30 Rock
- Most of the characters aren't great

- Video Games
- None again!

Gold Coast 2015, July 06 (Not Fair)
After another free breakfast it was already time to check-out and begin the slow trip to the airport. I thought I'd have more planned for the last day when I booked the flights, but probably should have selected a time around the middle of the day instead of late afternoon as it turned out.
I got the tram down to Pacific Fair to start - I can only vaguely remember it from a school trip we took in about year 10, but I imagined it being much, much bigger and better than it actually was. It didn't help that half of the place was shut down for major renovations, there wasn't even a cinema or any other form of entertainment.
So with that activity cut short we set off over to Broadbeach, which contains a beach and some shops. I got a juice and had a quick rest across in the park because it was still a bit early for lunch, then we set off again on foot, south down to Mermaid Beach. The street closest to the beach was full of flashy houses that all appeared to have been built or renovated within the last five years somehow - so a bit out of my price range. This street also appeared to have been part of the full marathon route as there was still hydration gel wrappers scattered everywhere.
After about two kilometres of walking in the sun we made it just in time for lunch at Burger Fuel! So now NSW and Queensland both have several Burger Fuels, but still none for Victoria. Anyway, I got the usual vegetable burger and fries which was up to their usual standard.
Since it was a bit far (about four kilometres) to walk to Burleigh Head (not Burleigh Heads apparently) we got the local bus down instead. After getting some drinks and visiting the beach for a while I hiked along the trail through Burleigh Head National Park. This would have to be about the smallest national park I've been to, they had a few walking tracks through the bush land for about two kilometres, which was actually a good distance for a bit of light recovery exercise.
After finally reaching the other end there was a bus stop right there - perfect, except it was the local bus instead of the one for the airport. The next bus stop wasn't too far away though and we were off to the airport with about an hour to spare. The Gold Coast airport is pretty desolate when you have a bit of time to kill, but at least they had free wifi and the world's least enthusiastic Hungry Jack's storm dessert.

Gold Coast 2015, July 05 (Growing Pains)
Sunday was an even earlier start due to the 6am starting time for the half marathon (yet the full marathon only starts at 7am). I grabbed a quick muesli bar for a snack at 4:45am before suffering a nose bleed while getting ready for no obvious reason. We walked over to the tram stop at 5am to go about four stops north to the start at Southport - I expected the trams to be full since we were so from the start of the tram line down at Broadbeach, but Jason hoped otherwise. It turned out I was right as both trams that came through were packed to the limit, like trying to take a train to the Melbourne Showgrounds!
My foot was already starting to feel sore while just standing around waiting 10 minutes for the tram, which wasn't a good sign. With the trams ruled out we set off walking to the start line instead, as did most other people. It was around 3-4 kilometres to the start which wasn't ideal, but served as a warm up I suppose. We arrived just as they were letting people on to the road to line up, so we got a great spot near the front of the A group - for people that run under 1 hour 40 minutes or something. All of the announcements prior to the race were being made in both English and Japanese...
And then we were off! I began at a very slow speed of about 4:25/km to see how my foot responded - but it was still very dark so I could hardly read the time on my watch. By about the 3 kilometre mark my foot was killing every time I landed on it, I was close to either giving up or walking the rest of the race, but decided to stick it out a little longer and tried to be tread even softer on my left foot. At about 5 kilometres in there was a small turnaround loop where you can see the people ahead coming back the other way, but I didn't spot Jason so he must have been even more than 500 metres ahead already.
I managed to make it through to the halfway turnaround without the pain getting any worse, although due to a change in my running action my right hip had tightened up as well. Because the course is almost directly up and back you get to see everyone ahead of you coming back the other way - first the leaders who were probably 10 minutes ahead already, then I spotted Jason about a kilometre ahead as well too.
After the halfway mark the pain seemed to have gone from a 10/10 down to a 7/10 so I was able to speed up a little to about 4:10/km. I set a goal of seeing if I could catch the 1 hour 30 minutes pace group, who were just in sight down the road. A highlight on the way back was some cool calypso music playing at the 15 kilometre mark, which lifted my spirits temporarily. By about 18 kilometres I finally started to struggle a bit, and it was starting to warm up too, but I caught the pace group ahead at last after 19 kilometres which was a relief, then sprinted out the finish to beat my goal by about 50 seconds and just made the top 400 (399 out of nearly 9000).
At the end of the race you get to collect your free t-shirt and finisher medal, then they had the standard drinks and fruit tables. There was no trouble getting the tram back to the hotel at least, and we were all done by about 8:30am, much earlier than I expected.
The hotel had a decent free breakfast with cereals, toast and some "warm" pancakes that I suspect had been sitting around for some time. After breakfast a tram and bus ride took us out to the Harbour Town Outlet Mall that didn't appear to be near any harbours. The Nike store had 30% off all clothes so I got another pair of running shorts and t-shirt, but no good bargains for shoes - given that both of my feet were wrecked by this stage it would have been hard to determine what a comfortable shoe felt like anymore... It was quite amusing that several other sports and surf wear stores that I went to next all had exactly 30% off their prices too, but I didn't find anything else to buy. At EB Games I did pick up a bargain, getting a new copy of Forza Horizon 2 for about $30.
So that was enough shopping, and it was back to Surfers Paradise for some lunch at Zambrero - the burrito not the nachos this time! Afterwards I grabbed a drink and some donuts and went over to the beach to give my legs a bit of a break. When finished relaxing I scouted out some options for dinner before heading back to the hotel to drop off the shopping.
There was a place called King Tutt's Putt Putt just across from the hotel offering three courses for $20 which seemed like a reasonable option. The courses were not bad, although only a few holes would be considered tricky. I went first on every hole which I believe gave Jason a bit of an advantage (seeing what not do do), I lost the first two courses but won the last. We got stuck behind this annoying family on the last course who took forever to play a hole, we'd wait around five minutes to let them get ahead by two or three holes, then catch up before they'd even done one more.
After golf I got in a bit of rehab at the hotel spa and sauna before heading out to dinner at the local Nando's - since pizza and mexican were already crossed off, that just left burgers to go? I then went to investigate the milk drinks at the local Coles to see if they had anything different to the boring Melbourne choices - they had a lot of Breaka flavours including banana and lime! and some other brand I forget the name of. I picked up a "limited edition" caramel brownie Breaka but it was just alright.
My hip had been getting worse all day to the point I could barely lift my leg, so I headed back to the hotel for the night and finished packing up for the morning.

Gold Coast 2015, July 04 (The GC)
The Gold Coast long weekend adventure started with a 7am drive to the airport, this time there was space left in the main long term car park, so there was no trouble with the shuttle bus like last time. On board the flight the recently advertised Virgin Australia complimentary snack was a coconut bun, very small but tasty enough. The "entertainment app" you have to install on your own devices was a waste of time, nothing worth watching in the TV section, the movies were more recent but there wasn't really enough time for one, so I just watched "The Cube" on my tablet instead, since my iriver mp3 player I've had for over 10 years suddenly got stuck with the locked button permanently on.
At the Gold Coast airport I picked up a Go Card for $10 (refundable) with $20 credit, so it's better than Myki already. We caught the express bus up to Broadbeach South then switched over to the tram to get to Surfers Paradise. Along the way there was lots of shops scattered just off the highway, which kind of reminded me of LA a bit. We stopped off at La Porchetta in Surfers Paradise for a pizza lunch, as some of the other locations I had written down further north in Southport weren't open for lunch on the weekend, not sure why.
After lunch it was back on the tram down to the Gold Coast Convention Centre, where they had some young girls cheerleader event but more importantly the bib collection and expo for tomorrow's Gold Coast airport marathon (and half marathon event that doesn't go near the airport). The expo was about the same as every other one, a mixture of running clothes and energy food and drinks on sale, but I didn't find anything to buy. I did get a flyer for a Queenstown marathon in November which might be worth looking into.
It was just time for hotel check-in, so another convenient tram ride to Surfers Paradise North stopped just outside the hotel. The room we got was spacious but it was on the ground floor - I didn't even know hotels had rooms on the ground floor. The TV only had about five Foxtel channels like usual, but three were sports at least.
After a quick break at the hotel I headed over to see what the great Surfers Paradise had to offer. Starting down Cavill Mall I ended up at the beach quite soon, it was a little cold and windy in the shade so I didn't stay around for long. I had a further look around the Esplanade and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, which was predominately made up of surf shops and restaurants. I found a souvenir shop with a rubber magnet, which was the main goal for the day.
Not wanting to eat a big dinner the night before the race we just went to Coles for some bread, drinks and fruit for the evening and then headed back to the hotel. Because I've been dealing with serious foot pain (and been unable to run at all) for the last week I decided to take the tram for one stop instead of walking another 10-15 minutes - the time between the stops was a little more than 60 seconds and cost $2.50 - that's boulevard robbery!
So that was it for the day, back at the hotel I got to see Carlton lose again in the evening AFL match while resting up for an early morning.
