May Review

This is the May review, which will probably be much shorter because not much happened.

I managed a few longer runs during the month in the lead up to the Great Ocean Road race. Unfortunately two weekends in a row that happened to be in the middle of a downpour, once even with hail, which isn't a whole lot of fun. The Great Ocean Road 23km half marathon was a good event, it took a little bit of organising and a lot of driving though, so it's probably not the thing I'll do every year. There are separate posts already for day one and day two. For the month I set a new record with 340 kilometres in total, with winter coming up that record might stay around for a while.

The first month of being a shareholder was a rocky ride, in general there's been a lot of up and down and I've had two very poor performers from the beginning, but overall I made a gain of about 2.8%. Looking into the early future in June, that profit might not last for long...

Somehow I had two on-call sessions for work in the same month, including one disaster where an externally hosted website failed at 11am on Friday night and didn't get restored until after 2am, so basically I was dead for the rest of the weekend. The couple of hundred dollars extra probably isn't worth the stress. The second session during the week luckily had no problems. I was involved in conducting interviews for a contract developer to join the team which was a new experience, basically we got flooded with resumes and not at all once, so by the end of it we all just wanted to hire someone good and be done with it. We did find someone with experience in the end, but because of the nature of having several projects on the go at once it hasn't actually made my workload any better for the moment.

The NBA playoffs continued with the second and third round but really did not have any good matches or interesting teams. The best case scenarios played out at least, with the LA Clippers failing in the second round and Atlanta, Cleveland and Golden State all moving on. My NBA League Pass subscription automatically rolled over into a second month, so that meant I got to watch a third round that was even less of a contest in both conferences. Now I need to work out how to cancel my subscription so I don't pay for a whole month just to watch something like the last two finals games.

I had a few games on ten pin bowling for the first time in years. I never really got my action perfected, but I did progress from 117 in the first game to 160 in the third. Somehow Jason got seven strikes out of eight to finish well ahead with a 204 in the final game.

My to do list is now a bit smaller, but did not see a lot of action:

  • The Europe holiday took a bit of a back seat to the Great Ocean Road weekend
    • I'm pretty happy with the end result of the schedule, except missing out on Iceland
    • I just need to wait for the EPL fixtures to come out on June 17 before I make bookings
    • And get leave approved hopefully...
  • After months of delay I finally started updating my resume
    • Hopefully it's fully up to date (and Linked In too) by the end of June

So that's it for a quiet month, here's the usual summary:

  • Books
    • Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
      • Not as good as the first but still ok
      • 7 out of 10
    • Dexter In The Dark by Jeff Lindsay
      • Didn't like this one
      • Too much focus on a ancient mysterious force influencing bad people
      • Dexter's kids being trained to be killers to is a bad plot
      • 4 out of 10
    • Dexter By Design
      • Definitely an improvement on the previous
      • Dexter is a lot less efficient and intelligent in the books
      • 6 out of 10
  • Movies
    • Run All Night
      • Pretty typical revenge movie
      • 4 out of 10
  • Music
    • Albums
      • Real Estate - Atlas
        • Soft indie
        • Relaxing to listen to
        • 8 out of 10
    • Tickets
      • Death Cab For Cutie July 27
      • The Grates August 15
        • I can't go because it conflicts with the Europe holiday plans!
  • TV
    • Community
      • A couple of great episodes but the rest were quite poor
      • 5 out of 10
    • Criminal Minds
      • Starting to run a bit thin of the crime ideas now
      • JLH addition was pretty pointless
      • 6 out of 10
    • Survivor
      • The three themed teams didn't really work once again
      • Not many enjoyable contestants
      • Best result possible at the end at least
      • 8 out of 10
  • Video Games
    • Played
      • None again!
    • Purchased
      • Uncharted $24 at Target
